G'day,
We hope that all of you wonderful people and your canines are keeping well!
This week we would like to introduce you to Harley. He is a beautiful dog recently rescued from a boarding kennel, he is a German Shepherd cross and is a very handsome lad (see below). When we picked him up he 'hid' in the corner behind the seats of the car and was in complete shut down, totally unable to deal with the world around him, it was easier to close his eyes and pretend the world didn't exist than to even look at it. We know that in the past he was a happy active dog, so rehabilitation commences.
Upon arrival to his new foster carers home, he was terrified and hid in the corners of the back yard behind bushes and trees, once he had had time to calm down a little he was then introduced to his new 'safe space' the laundry. Slowly but surely over the first week, Harley nervously ventured out of the laundry and into the main house, as he was so nervous about his surroundings it has been paramount that we applied no pressure to this frightened dog, allowing him to discover the house in his own time. With plenty of active Dog Listening and a big helping of patients Harley is now content to come into the main living space and snuggle into his new beanbag. He is still a very nervous boy and will need plenty of time to grow in confidence but we have high hopes.
We plan to take a video clip to show you this lovely boy as he slowly grows in confidence, we will let you know here when the clips are up and running. We hope to share Harley's development with you over the next few months.
As to our other work supplying goods to those that need it, we now make fortnightly trips to the bush fire areas filling the orders to keep dogs safe and warm. We are very pleased to inform you that we have assisted in excess of 200 owners keep their dogs safe and set them up with kennels, beds, coats etc. It has indeed been a lengthy process but a rewarding one. We will be continuing our supply of goods and at our next board meeting we will assess the need for our continuing visits.
As one project slowly wraps up, another presents itself. In Hobart Tasmania we have discovered a wonderful sanctuary were they rescue all sorts of abused animals, not least of all dogs. They currently house 15 K9s in their purpose built enclosures, all having come from terrible circumstances. We will keep you updated on the sanctuary and hope to film some of our work with them to show you. Lynne and myself will be visiting them in the next few weeks to teach them Dog Listening (the natural language of canines) to assist them in their rehabilitation of the dogs.
Until then take care,
Luke Williams
